The Mountain Race that Erased a Man | Michael Lemaitre
Michael Paul Lemaitre started the Mount Marathon race on a mountain in Seward, Alaska when things would go wrong. By all appearances, it seemed as if the mountain erased a man.
Missing runners and record breaking injuries were just some of the things race attendees witnessed on the mountain on July 4, 2012.

1
00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:04,620
Every year in Alaska, there's a mountain race that takes place on the 4th of July.
2
00:00:05,120 --> 00:00:07,640
It's very popular and pretty dangerous.
3
00:00:08,140 --> 00:00:15,940
Some people say that if you're not bleeding from at least one spot, by the time you finish, you didn't try hard enough.
4
00:00:16,440 --> 00:00:31,080
For 65 year old, Michael Lemaitre, it's exactly what he wants to do because even after ignoring multiple instructions and warnings, he's more determined than ever to run up and down a literal mountain.
5
00:00:31,330 --> 00:00:33,880
Which even the most physically fit struggled to do.
6
00:00:34,410 --> 00:00:38,970
in the entire history of the race there have never been any fatalities.
7
00:00:39,300 --> 00:00:40,350
Only injuries.
8
00:00:40,850 --> 00:00:46,130
That is until 2012, because several people would end up seriously hurt.
9
00:00:46,550 --> 00:00:48,200
But Michael would start a race.
10
00:00:48,350 --> 00:00:52,880
And then by all appearances be erased off the face of the mountain.
11
00:00:53,380 --> 00:00:54,280
I'm Tatiana.
12
00:00:54,780 --> 00:00:56,580
And this is occurrence.
13
00:01:06,84.729166667 --> 00:01:09,864.729166667
The Mount marathon race is only three miles or 4.8
14
00:01:09,864.729166667 --> 00:01:10,884.729166667
kilometers long.
15
00:01:11,334.729166667 --> 00:01:19,344.729166667
But it starts at sea level and has a 3022 foot vertical gain and loss over the sketchiest terrain.
16
00:01:19,844.729166667 --> 00:01:22,424.729166667
You can also watch the entire brutal race.
17
00:01:22,874.729166667 --> 00:01:26,864.729166667
From right in downtown Seward, Alaska, where it starts.
18
00:01:27,364.729166667 --> 00:01:30,694.729166667
In the past bibs were limited to 350 men.
19
00:01:31,194.729166667 --> 00:01:34,224.729166667
350 women and 200 juniors.
20
00:01:34,724.729166667 --> 00:01:39,434.729166667
But in 2012, they expanded the race to 400 men and 400 women.
21
00:01:39,934.729166667 --> 00:01:44,944.72916667
90% of participants were returnees and there was a lottery system in place.
22
00:01:45,444.72916667 --> 00:01:49,104.72916667
This expansion and the lottery system included Michael Maitri.
23
00:01:49,604.72916667 --> 00:01:53,114.72916667
He had never participated in the mountain marathon race before.
24
00:01:53,614.72916667 --> 00:02:06,64.72916667
The month before Mount marathon, he finished a 12 K event and was a regular to the gym, but he received several warnings prior to starting a literal race up a mountain that he may not be suited to run.
25
00:02:06,564.72916667 --> 00:02:12,444.72916667
The first being in the letter that told him he won one of the 60 minutes lottery slots in the race.
26
00:02:12,894.72916667 --> 00:02:18,954.72916667
It very clearly said to not make race day, his first time up and down the mountain.
27
00:02:19,454.72916667 --> 00:02:24,974.72916667
The mountain was open to the public and racers could walk or run the route to practice as they pleased.
28
00:02:25,474.72916667 --> 00:02:26,974.72916667
Michael didn't do this.
29
00:02:27,474.72916667 --> 00:02:29,244.72916667
Michael was highly educated.
30
00:02:29,334.72916667 --> 00:02:32,724.72916667
He had a PhD in administration and was a grief counselor.
31
00:02:33,224.72916667 --> 00:02:38,174.72916667
He actually volunteered to counsel children orphaned by the nine 11 attacks.
32
00:02:38,674.72916667 --> 00:02:45,64.72916667
When he attended the university of Alaska Fairbank's he met his wife, Peggy, and they had three kids.
33
00:02:45,564.72916667 --> 00:02:47,664.72916667
They all lived in Anchorage, Alaska.
34
00:02:48,164.72916667 --> 00:02:53,574.72916667
Michael was known to take his family, camping, fishing, and hiking on outdoor adventures.
35
00:02:54,54.72916667 --> 00:02:57,354.72916667
But he was also known for his spontaneous decisions.
36
00:02:57,854.72916667 --> 00:03:03,584.72916667
One time he and a friend tried to boat 120 miles down a river and nearly sank.
37
00:03:03,584.72916667 --> 00:03:05,234.72916667
When the boat started falling apart.
38
00:03:05,734.72916667 --> 00:03:08,314.72916667
They made temporary repairs and kept going.
39
00:03:08,814.72916667 --> 00:03:13,614.72916667
The friend actually said he was pretty sure they only survived because they entertained God.
40
00:03:14,114.72916667 --> 00:03:14,834.72916667
Another time.
41
00:03:14,834.72916667 --> 00:03:19,814.72916667
Michael went swimming in big lake, which had freezing water because.
42
00:03:20,314.72916667 --> 00:03:20,914.72916667
Why not.
43
00:03:21,414.72916667 --> 00:03:26,394.72916667
And a couple of times for the sake of wanting to learn how to cross country ski.
44
00:03:26,894.72916667 --> 00:03:29,414.72916667
He entered into the Iditarod invitational.
45
00:03:29,914.72916667 --> 00:03:33,964.72916667
Which is a 350 mile race across the Alaskan wilderness.
46
00:03:34,354.72916667 --> 00:03:36,904.72916667
On foot, bicycle or skis.
47
00:03:37,404.72916667 --> 00:03:39,384.72916667
And he finished last twice.
48
00:03:39,884.72916667 --> 00:03:41,984.72916667
He didn't actually train or prepare for it.
49
00:03:41,984.72916667 --> 00:03:43,154.72916667
He just did it.
50
00:03:43,654.72916667 --> 00:03:45,844.72916667
So he's clearly the type to just wing it.
51
00:03:46,344.72916667 --> 00:03:55,734.72916667
But the mountain marathon race is not something to just wing the average incline in decline going up and down the marathon trail is about 38 degrees.
52
00:03:56,234.72916667 --> 00:04:04,184.72916667
And then there are spots on the trail that are nearly vertical and others that are flat, but are covered in loose beds of shale, which is rocks.
53
00:04:04,454.72916667 --> 00:04:05,684.72916667
Or dense brush.
54
00:04:06,184.72916667 --> 00:04:10,24.72916667
The average speed going up, the mountain is just two miles per hour.
55
00:04:10,234.72916667 --> 00:04:12,634.72916667
And going down is 12 miles per hour.
56
00:04:13,134.72916667 --> 00:04:15,114.72916667
On the morning of the marathon race.
57
00:04:15,384.72916667 --> 00:04:17,604.72916667
Peggy tried to convince him not to race.
58
00:04:18,104.72916667 --> 00:04:21,104.72916667
She asked him if he was sure he wanted to do this.
59
00:04:21,654.72916667 --> 00:04:25,284.72916667
And Michael said he would be fine because he was planning to take it slow.
60
00:04:25,784.72916667 --> 00:04:29,654.72916667
She told him to come back to her and he said, I will, don't worry.
61
00:04:29,774.72916667 --> 00:04:30,464.72916667
I'll be back.
62
00:04:30,964.72916667 --> 00:04:37,504.72916667
Leading up to that conversation, his wife and other family and friends tried to talk him out of it multiple times.
63
00:04:38,4.72916667 --> 00:04:45,84.72916667
Michael attended a training session the day before the race to it showed the route and what they might see, and it showed the types of injuries.
64
00:04:45,84.72916667 --> 00:04:47,154.72916667
People usually sustained while running.
65
00:04:47,694.72916667 --> 00:04:50,984.72916667
In the past there were dislocations fractures.
66
00:04:51,374.72916667 --> 00:04:53,654.72916667
Broken bones sticking out of people's skin.
67
00:04:54,154.72916667 --> 00:04:56,584.72916667
Impalements from tree branches and shale.
68
00:04:57,84.72916667 --> 00:04:58,14.72916667
Heat illness.
69
00:04:58,254.72916667 --> 00:05:03,564.72916667
And one time a woman was chased by a bear and hurt herself, trying to get away.
70
00:05:04,64.72916667 --> 00:05:09,884.72916667
In fact, the guy running the meeting flat out said, if you haven't been up the mountain, you need to go home.
71
00:05:10,34.72916667 --> 00:05:10,964.72916667
Do not race.
72
00:05:11,414.72916667 --> 00:05:18,14.72916667
One participant later said you need to run it at least 12 times before being prepared enough to join the actual race.
73
00:05:18,514.72916667 --> 00:05:20,984.72916667
All of this, that seems just spurred Michael on.
74
00:05:21,444.72916667 --> 00:05:24,174.72916667
Another activity to add to his adventure stories.
75
00:05:24,674.72916667 --> 00:05:26,294.72916667
On July 4th, 2012.
76
00:05:26,654.72916667 --> 00:05:27,974.72916667
At 3:15 PM.
77
00:05:28,274.72916667 --> 00:05:31,424.72916667
The second wave of the race that included Michael began.
78
00:05:31,924.72916667 --> 00:05:34,684.72916667
He was wearing all black, a black shirt.
79
00:05:34,984.72916667 --> 00:05:37,304.72916667
Shorts had band and shoes.
80
00:05:37,824.72916667 --> 00:05:41,844.72916667
It was about 52 degrees Fahrenheit, or 11 degrees Celsius.
81
00:05:42,344.72916667 --> 00:05:44,384.72916667
It actually rained the day before the race.
82
00:05:44,634.72916667 --> 00:05:47,754.72916667
And the conditions on the mountain were more dangerous than usual.
83
00:05:48,254.72916667 --> 00:05:51,14.72916667
There were snow falls with layers of ice beneath it.
84
00:05:51,514.72916667 --> 00:05:56,194.72916667
Obviously not ideal to run on for the average flat marathon on a city street.
85
00:05:56,524.72916667 --> 00:05:58,564.72916667
And especially not on a mountain.
86
00:05:59,64.72916667 --> 00:06:04,944.72916667
After completing the first half mile run that starts in Seward, Alaska, and making it to the base of the mountain.
87
00:06:05,154.72916667 --> 00:06:06,714.72916667
It's an immediate rock climb.
88
00:06:06,984.72916667 --> 00:06:10,524.72916667
It's almost vertical, literally climbing on your hands and feet.
89
00:06:11,24.72916667 --> 00:06:14,144.72916667
Followed by a 30 degree sloping, dirt trail.
90
00:06:14,324.72916667 --> 00:06:15,524.72916667
That's run on foot.
91
00:06:16,24.72916667 --> 00:06:18,754.72916667
That's right about where Michael started falling behind.
92
00:06:19,254.72916667 --> 00:06:24,114.72916667
After that dirt trail is a dense forest and coming right after the forest is shale.
93
00:06:24,614.72916667 --> 00:06:28,574.72916667
Some of it is loose enough that people have sunk into it up to their knees.
94
00:06:29,74.72916667 --> 00:06:34,414.72916667
After that you go up a bit further to reach the halfway point of the trail, the turnaround point.
95
00:06:34,714.72916667 --> 00:06:40,894.72916667
It's marked by a rock where you then take a different route back down the mountain to avoid the people still coming up.
96
00:06:41,394.72916667 --> 00:06:42,444.72916667
Going back down.
97
00:06:42,474.72916667 --> 00:06:47,634.72916667
According to participants is pretty much a barely controlled free fall down the mountain.
98
00:06:48,134.72916667 --> 00:06:54,464.72916667
Some people just slid down that day and dealt with the unique pains from doing that later.
99
00:06:54,964.72916667 --> 00:06:59,194.72916667
By the time Michael made it to the halfway point up the mountain at four 30.
100
00:06:59,524.72916667 --> 00:07:01,774.72916667
Many of the runners had completed their race.
101
00:07:02,274.72916667 --> 00:07:06,444.72916667
Let me be clear, not the halfway point of the race, not the turnaround point.
102
00:07:06,744.72916667 --> 00:07:09,114.72916667
He was halfway to the turnaround point.
103
00:07:09,174.72916667 --> 00:07:11,874.72916667
At the same time others were finishing their race.
104
00:07:12,374.72916667 --> 00:07:17,354.72916667
A picture was taken of him at that time and he didn't appear to be carrying any water on him.
105
00:07:17,854.72916667 --> 00:07:20,434.72916667
But there was a water station at the turnaround point.
106
00:07:20,934.72916667 --> 00:07:25,434.72916667
Tom Walsh was the lead midcourse, timekeeper and stationed at turnaround point.
107
00:07:25,934.72916667 --> 00:07:32,384.72916667
A little after five o'clock a runner reached the turnaround and mistakenly told Tom they were the last runner.
108
00:07:32,884.72916667 --> 00:07:33,304.72916667
Tom.
109
00:07:33,304.72916667 --> 00:07:38,194.72916667
And some of the other volunteers that were with him waited 45 minutes before packing up to leave.
110
00:07:38,694.72916667 --> 00:07:41,664.72916667
On his way down the mountain, he saw Michael on his way up.
111
00:07:42,164.72916667 --> 00:07:46,244.72916667
He was a little confused because the winner across the finish line.
112
00:07:46,514.72916667 --> 00:07:47,654.72916667
Two hours ago.
113
00:07:48,154.72916667 --> 00:07:53,464.72916667
But Michael called out to him and asked how far he was from the top and asked if he could still get a finish.
114
00:07:53,964.72916667 --> 00:08:00,264.72916667
Tom said he was about 200 feet from the turnaround point and to loop around it and then take the descending trail back down.
115
00:08:00,764.72916667 --> 00:08:04,184.72916667
He asked for Michael's bib number, which was 5, 4, 8.
116
00:08:04,684.72916667 --> 00:08:09,184.72916667
And then texted officials at the bottom to expect him home in about an hour and a half.
117
00:08:09,684.72916667 --> 00:08:16,374.72916667
Tom said he noticed Michael moving slowly and it was starting to get cold and foggy, but otherwise he wasn't struggling.
118
00:08:16,374.72916667 --> 00:08:19,404.72916667
So Tom and the other volunteers continued down the mountain.
119
00:08:19,904.72916667 --> 00:08:23,114.72916667
The rock marking Turn around point is not a huge Boulder.
120
00:08:23,114.72916667 --> 00:08:29,894.72916667
Like I thought it was apparently it's a relatively distinguished rock, but you would probably only recognize it.
121
00:08:30,104.72916667 --> 00:08:31,94.72916667
If you had seen it.
122
00:08:31,424.72916667 --> 00:08:31,964.72916667
Before.
123
00:08:32,464.72916667 --> 00:08:33,394.72916667
It's easy to miss.
124
00:08:33,394.72916667 --> 00:08:40,864.72916667
If you don't know what to look for and continue onto the true summit since where they were supposed to turn back was a false summit.
125
00:08:41,364.72916667 --> 00:08:44,754.72916667
Or maybe get lost, trying to find a more obvious Boulder.
126
00:08:45,254.72916667 --> 00:08:48,44.72916667
But time passed and there was no sign of Michael.
127
00:08:48,544.72916667 --> 00:08:49,384.72916667
By 8:00 PM.
128
00:08:49,384.72916667 --> 00:08:51,34.72916667
Peggy called for search and rescue.
129
00:08:51,394.72916667 --> 00:08:53,554.72916667
It started raining and was getting colder.
130
00:08:54,54.72916667 --> 00:09:00,774.72916667
By 2:00 AM helicopters from the Alaska state troopers were searching the Mount side with infrared technology.
131
00:09:01,274.72916667 --> 00:09:06,554.72916667
Everyone knew he was in light clothing and they were worried about if he was injured and suffering from hyperthermia.
132
00:09:07,54.72916667 --> 00:09:11,194.72916667
That same day two other runners suffered severe injuries.
133
00:09:11,694.72916667 --> 00:09:17,184.72916667
And the women's race, a runner slid over a ledge and broke several ribs and lacerated her liver.
134
00:09:17,684.72916667 --> 00:09:19,724.72916667
She would end up making a full recovery.
135
00:09:20,54.72916667 --> 00:09:28,841.10104875
But later in the men's race, a runner slid in that same spot and broke both of his legs and suffered brain damage and memory loss.
136
00:09:29,341.10104875 --> 00:09:31,561.10104875
The next morning, the search effort increased.
137
00:09:31,891.10104875 --> 00:09:39,151.10104875
There were 60 searchers on the mountain and a rescue squadron from the Alaska air national guard in the air.
138
00:09:39,651.10104875 --> 00:09:43,371.10104875
They specialized in finding crash pilots and missing hikers.
139
00:09:43,871.10104875 --> 00:09:51,281.10104875
Four days after Michael vanished, the official search was called off, but the volunteer fire department of Seward kept looking.
140
00:09:51,531.10104875 --> 00:09:54,321.10104875
Along with his family and cadaver dogs.
141
00:09:54,821.10104875 --> 00:10:01,421.10104875
Friends actually paid for high resolution photographs of the mountain, hoping to find any trace of Michael.
142
00:10:01,901.10104875 --> 00:10:04,451.10104875
But not a single trace would be found.
143
00:10:04,951.10104875 --> 00:10:10,141.10104875
By mid-July all of the official searches stopped, but people would still volunteer to look for him.
144
00:10:10,641.10104875 --> 00:10:18,441.10104875
It really shook the town that someone went missing on a race where you can see every runner going up from beginning to end.
145
00:10:18,941.10104875 --> 00:10:20,741.10104875
No one knew where he could have gone.
146
00:10:21,241.10104875 --> 00:10:25,651.10104875
Peggy ended up suing the sewer chamber of commerce, the organizers of the race.
147
00:10:25,981.10104875 --> 00:10:29,221.10104875
In July of 2013 for $5 million.
148
00:10:29,721.10104875 --> 00:10:35,811.10104875
They settled for 20,000 and the chamber of commerce said it was because of their insurance providers decision.
149
00:10:36,171.10104875 --> 00:10:37,851.10104875
Not because they thought responsible.
150
00:10:38,351.10104875 --> 00:10:42,941.10104875
After all Michael did sign a waiver saying he understood the dangerous of the race.
151
00:10:43,441.10104875 --> 00:10:47,851.10104875
It also came out that he had advanced glaucoma and experienced quote.
152
00:10:48,351.10104875 --> 00:10:51,411.10104875
Total obliteration of his lower field of vision.
153
00:10:51,911.10104875 --> 00:10:52,361.10104875
End quote.
154
00:10:52,861.10104875 --> 00:10:53,851.10104875
It was so bad.
155
00:10:53,851.10104875 --> 00:11:00,65.43211451
In fact, that in 2009, he filed a complaint against his employer where he claimed he was discriminated against.
156
00:11:00,435.43211451 --> 00:11:05,155.43211451
Due to his disability? Michael told the investigators that quote.
157
00:11:05,655.43211451 --> 00:11:12,285.43211451
What I see as far as peripheral vision is I see everybody from the top of their head to the tip of their nose.
158
00:11:12,785.43211451 --> 00:11:17,435.43211451
It was over a month before I realized my supervisor had to go T.
159
00:11:17,935.43211451 --> 00:11:18,415.43211451
End quote.
160
00:11:18,915.43211451 --> 00:11:22,365.43211451
Apparently he had a valid driver's license and surgery.
161
00:11:22,365.43211451 --> 00:11:25,69.30966553
So his vision without glasses was 20 30.
162
00:11:25,909.30966553 --> 00:11:29,654.43438209
But he still had to turn his head and look down to see things beside him.
163
00:11:30,154.43438209 --> 00:11:34,564.43438209
After Michael's disappearance, a number of changes were made to Mount marathon.
164
00:11:35,64.43438209 --> 00:11:38,364.43438209
There is now a time limit for racers to reach the turnaround.
165
00:11:38,784.43438209 --> 00:11:41,244.43438209
And they monitor racers on the course better.
166
00:11:41,744.43438209 --> 00:11:45,524.43438209
They're also kept away from the cliffs where the two runners slid off.
167
00:11:46,24.43438209 --> 00:11:53,884.43438209
Peggy filed to have Michael declared dead just two weeks after the disappearance and to this day, no traces of him have ever been found.
168
00:11:54,384.43438209 --> 00:11:58,434.43438209
But when she filed that motion, So close to when he initially disappeared.
169
00:11:58,764.43438209 --> 00:12:00,804.43438209
And then followed it up with a lawsuit.
170
00:12:01,164.43438209 --> 00:12:04,884.43438209
People actually speculated that this was the plan all along.
171
00:12:05,334.43438209 --> 00:12:07,164.43438209
That Michael was somewhere in hiding.
172
00:12:07,404.43438209 --> 00:12:09,24.43438209
Just waiting to gather money.
173
00:12:09,524.43438209 --> 00:12:12,254.43438209
It's been years since Michael went missing though.
174
00:12:12,254.43438209 --> 00:12:12,674.43438209
So.
175
00:12:12,924.43438209 --> 00:12:17,424.43438209
Even though the Alaska state troopers consider him missing and not dead.
176
00:12:17,424.43438209 --> 00:12:19,374.43438209
We can only speculate what happened.
177
00:12:19,924.43438209 --> 00:12:27,64.43438209
some of his family members think that maybe a bear got to him or he continued all the way up and got lost.
178
00:12:27,564.43438209 --> 00:12:36,524.43438209
But it's just crazy to me that in all of this time, No one has found anything related to Michael, not a shoe, not a shirt.
179
00:12:37,24.43438209 --> 00:12:38,674.43438209
No bones, nothing.
180
00:12:39,174.43438209 --> 00:12:45,254.43438209

00:12:49,524.43438209 --> 00:12:50,244.43438209

And see you next week.
