96 Lives Lost: The Untold Story of Wellington's Deadly Avalanche

37 year old James Henry O'Neill was superintendent of the great railway cascade division and responsible for keeping mail, freight, and passenger trains moving for the entire Western half of Washington state. O'Neill and his men had a reputation for being able to handle snowfall in the area, keeping the lines open and having no passenger fatalities. Until a forecasted storm headed his way caused the worst avalanche disaster in American history, killing and injuring hundreds.
